My Interview With Dante Basco — AKA Rufio (Leader of The Lost Boys)

By Daniel DiPiazza • you can follow him on Twitter here

Today, I wanted to share something freaking COOL with you.

Did you grow up watching the 1991 movie Hook?

If you did, you’ll remember the iconic teenage badass Rufio.

Growing up, what kid didn’t want to be like him?

Red triple-mohawk, leather armor, golden sword.

And he skateboarded.

Dude was a legend.

Allow me to jog your memory…

LOL at Robin Williams. “Put that thing down before you poke someone’s eye out.”

I begged my mom to let me get a mohawk after seeing the movie — and she somehow convinced me that a fade was the same thing.

Well, years later, I still don’t have a mohawk.

But I did have the honor and privilege of sitting down with the one and only Dante Basco — AKA Rufio — to chat about what he’s been up to. This is another great interview brought to you by my partners at The Lip TV.

SO many cool insights to learn from this veteran actor who literally has seen it all. You’ll learn about:

  • Dante’s experience auditioning for Steven Spielberg (and why Spielberg said Basco was the only actor to truly “scare” him) — 1:24
  • How it felt to act with Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts — including an embarrassing lesson Hoffman taught Dante — 3:45
  • What working actors are doing when you don’t see them on screen (inside the “Hollywood” game) — 6:59
  • Why being envious of other people’s success is actually counterproductive and destructive — 10:02
  • How ethnic actors are circumventing the traditional Hollywood system to become noticed — 17:01
  • Why being talented and good looking isn’t enough in a tough industry — and how to beat the odds — 18:00
  • Why “haters” are actually obsolete (and how to avoid hating on others) — 21:03
  • The surprising ways that his career as a child actor impacted his social life — 24:44
  • A ton more!

CAUTION: Pay attention to this man. He’s giving us a masterclass in hustling. Whether or not you want to be an actor, Dante’s advice for getting noticed and creating your own work is applicable to almost every field.

I’m really excited to share this with you guys! Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

PS — Do you ever wonder how I contact celebrities and convince them to come on the show? On Thursday, I’ll show you some of the actual emails I’ve sent out — and how you can use similar scripts to contact hard to reach people.

Stay tuned :)

I liked the discussion about luck. Successful folks create their own luck. Also laughed with the Dustin Hoffman quote!

This was a pleasant surprise for a Monday. I was a huge Hook fan as a kid and I’ve probably watched the movie 50x in my life.

A few of my favorite Quotes:

“being good is not lucky. Being at the top of your craft is on you”

“Don’t hate on other people that are more famous than you. You suck because you don’t exist”

“You should want to be good more than you want to be famous”

Also, The Dustin Hoffman V-Card story was awesome.
